India has one of the largest populations in the age group of 5-24 years. This demographic advantage is also giving birth to tremendous business opportunities, especially in the education sector. As a matter of fact, this is one of the fastest growing segments in the country. Income levels are rising and parents are willing to spend on their children’s education.

If you also want to enter this lucrative sector and open a CBSE school, read on. Here we will discuss the basic requisites to start one.

Form a Trust/Society/ Section 8 Company

As per the government’s norms, the administrative power of the school should lie with a Not-for-profit society or trust. Similarly one can also start a CBSE school by forming a Section 8 company.

Purchase/Lease the adequate land as required by CBSE

The Land planned for the school has to be either leased out or should be in the name of the society or the trust. The documents should be certified by the local land registration office

  • For metropolitan cities with a population exceeding 25 lakhs, the minimum land area should be 1 Acre and outside the city limits should be 1.5 Acres.
  • The minimum land requirement for CBSE schools in Delhi-NCR is 4000 sq. mts.
  • In hilly areas, the minimum land required is 1  acre.
  • At all other locations, the school must possess at least about 2 acres of land.

Apply for NOC

The NOC (NO-Objection Certificate) has to be obtained from the government of the state where you are planning to open a CBSE school.

Construct the School as per CBSE norms

School should be constructed as per the CBSE guidelines on infrastructure and should include classrooms with furniture, Library, Laboratory, Computer room, Principal’s room, Art and Craft room, Toilet Blocks, Drinking Water facility etc. The building should have provision for electrification, sanitation and plumbing work etc.

Besides this, a playground big enough to accommodate all the necessary sports and extra-curricular facilities should be maintained on the remaining part of the land.

Apply for recognition from the state government

Recognition could be granted only if a school fulfils the norms and standards within the prescribed time limit. This is a mandatory step.

Start the school- recruit teachers & admit students

Prepare an effective marketing strategy to attract admissions. Also, recruit teachers and ensure that they have the necessary qualifications according to Govt. norms. You may also need to provide training to your staff to function according to the needs of your curriculum and plans.

CBSE affiliation

For obtaining CBSE affiliation, a list of documents- the NOC obtained from state government, approval from the Municipal Corporation of the state and clearance from the Health Department needs to be submitted to the board authority.

You can decide to open an independent school or start a  school Franchise. Franchisors usually provide support for CBSE Affiliation and complete assistance for marketing and recruitment of staff. You also learn a lot from the Franchisor’s experience in the education sector, thus ensuring a high probability of success
